Power Duet3D over usb?

So this is probably a stupid question but...

Can I permanently power the logic board from a standard usb power supply via the on board usb connector? I am using external stepper drivers via a "Duet Expansion breakout board" and the heaters are also powered via external modules.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

You can provide 5VDC to the board via the three way connector that has the PS_ON on it. The USB connector isn't really intended for regular use but you should be able to tell from the schematics if it is essentially doing the same as I suggest anyway. Not sure if some functions are shut down when VIN is not detected.

5V in and USB seem to feed to the same point.

Thanks folks.
The board seems to run fine with 5v from the usb so I'll stick with it for now as there doesn't seem to be any specific issues in the schematic.

@cncmodeller, do you run it also with vin (e.g. 12V or 24V)? Is so, did you disconnect JP9 to disable the on-board 5V buck converter?

I presume this is what JP9 is for, anybody willing to comment?

@zapta you do need to disable the converter. There a header pin jumper that is moved or removed.

I'm only running the logic board on 5v so haven't pulled the jumper. I probably should do though just to prevent future forgetfulness. I don't have power running to the 12v connection as I'm not using the drivers or heater outputs of the Duet3D board. I have external stepper drivers running at 36v.

@cncmodeller Seems like you are not using most of the Duet, just the CPU and the Wifi or Ethernet module. You could probably just use an Arduino Due with a breakout board and a Wifi module.

But then the file upload to the SD card over the network would be very slow, and he wouldn't get Duet Web Control.

Personally I'm more than happy with using the duet as I believe in rewarding the development effort involved in creating a good product. I'm using closed loop stepper drivers hence the break out. I guess either closed loop on board or a cut back board without drivers would be a more cost effective solution but I'm more than happy to do prototyping this way. I may use the on board drivers for less position critical functions like a filiment changer etc.
