@dc42 Are there any news on this topic ?
Hi dc42, are there any news on driverless duet3 or addon boards for driving motors with external drivers ?!
We have a few tool board prototypes modified to drive a single external driver at 5V signals levels. We will turn this into a production item. We still need to lay it out on a PCB, but that shouldn't take long, because the design is based on our Tool Board.
We haven't yet made a decision on whether to make a driverless version of the main board.

DC42,
I would be interested in a driver-less version as well. Don't get me wrong, those 5160's are nice but I already have $200 invested in my hobby CNC's external drivers and when / if I make the switch from the UC100 to the Duet , I will also be getting a Duet wifi for my 3d printer. The thought of spending $400 + on the upgrade while shelving $400 in parts with no use is a real bummer. And I get that an $800 hit is nothing for most, but for a guy just trying to learn a new hobby....Kyle

Hi @dc42,
I'm interested in triggering camera exposures that synchronise with the X/Y axis motors. My camera has a 5V logic trigger input. Would the driverless Tool Board work to drive the camera as if it were an extuder?
I'd like to use the steps/mm setting as "exposures"/mm.

Yes.
But you can do this today. There are plenty of IO ports with outputs. These are 3.3V, but 3.3 V out to 5 V in logic almost always works.
You then trigger the camera with M42

On the v1.0 Duet 3 main boards there is also the output marked Laser/VFD, which is 5V.

Any news about this?
For the moment there are not possibility of connect a external stepper/servo driver?It is the only thing that blocks me from buying Duet3, and I must continue buying Duet2 with expansion board.
And the Duet3 have important things that i want start to approach immediately.
Best Regards

Good orning, any news for this expansion board?
Because I use the duet 2 wifi for 2 external motor..
if even the duet 3 had the possibility to connect I would buy it immediately!
Thanks,
Andrea

@dc42 I am also interested in external drivers for Duet 3.
Any update on plans / schedule?

The prototype external stepper driver boards were ordered some time ago. They are taking a little longer than usual because both the assembly companies we use had to shut down temporarily in order to rearrange their production lines to facilitate social distancing, and even now are probably operating at reduced capacity. We should be getting them soon.

I am also wanting to use my duet 3 board for an application that uses hybrid stepper motor drivers. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to use the board on a project that has small enough motors for the onboard drivers until you make an expansion board.

If you want to use a Duet 3 but not wait for the expansion boards, then these https://www.chip45.com/products/sammy-c21-1.0_atmel_smart_arm_sam_module_board_samc21_usb_dual_two_can.php are likely to be an option soon. I already have the firmware build for them and I have a couple on order for testing.

Duet 3 external stepper driver prototype boards have arrived and passed all tests. https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Duet_3_Expansion_1XD

@dc42 Thats awesome!
when can we expect them to be available for purchase?

@dc42 Hello!
I'm very interested in variant with buffers for external drivers.
I'll help with PCB tracing and prototype testing if I have approved schematics in KiCAD.
