Crimp Tool Engineer PA21 for Duet 3 IO_n ?
-
Hi,
Is this crimp tool Engineer PA21 suitable for the Duet 3 5 way IO_n connectors, specifically the Molex and Wurth crimps
Crimp pins above:
Molex 08-50-range
https://uk.farnell.com/search?st=08-50Wurth 61900113722DEC
https://uk.farnell.com/wurth-elektronik/61900113722dec/contact-2-54mm-crimp-awg28-22/dp/1841425?st=61900113722decI am aware not to mix Molex & Wurth products.
Or is the PA21 just for the larger 4 way JST Stepper connector ?
Can you recommend something suitable please (UK & cheap < £50) ?Thanks.
J.

I haven't used the PA21 myself but maybe this discussion thread might be helpful.

5 pin Io.n connectors are Molex KK while 4 pin stepper motor connectors are JST VH
For Molex KK i use engineer PA-09 and engineer PA-20 with great result...I have both crimpers thoug lately i only use PA-20 as i dont remeber where PA-09 is...for the JST VH connectors recommendations is the use of engineer PA-21 with the 2.2 side of jaws for the bare wire side and 2.5 for the insulation side of the wire -

Seems the pa21 has dies from 1.6 to 2.5 so that covers everything but ZH/PH for the Duet3 (at this time)
edit: at a closer look there is a height difference between the 1.6mm and 1.9mm wide dies along the pa09/20/21 so for thin wire gauges you might not get a good crimp. quick& dirty solution is to fold the wire back on itself to double up the copper strands

@JuJuDelta, this may help https://forum.duet3d.com/topic/20175/new-to-duet3d-and-sigma-conversion?_=1610169155757
Personally I prefer Amazon B078WNZ9FW over the Engineer models, as it feels more ergonomic.
For professional quality crimping you want a proper ratchet tool rather than the Engineer style generics.

The PA21 is the tool I recommend for Duet 3 boards. It will crimp both the VH396 connectors used for hot end and for the motors on the high-current boards, and the KK254 connectors used for everything else. I use it all the time.

I have both ratchet crimpers and an Engineer PA21. Although the PA21 might seem expensive and simple, it is the better of the two. Despite it being a two step process, I get a higher success rate with it.
A good crimp is very reliable but it is important to use the right cable , good quality connectors and the correct size die, so a bit of research is needed first. Most safety critical electrical / electronic equipment use crimp connectors for reliability but crimping with pliers and adding a blob of solder as advocated by some is not recommended!

Im an Auto Electrician for my day job, i use the engineer range, i feel the manual tools give me better manual control over the crimp

Many thanks to you all for the crimp tool recommendations.
I will try the Japanese Engineer PA-21
