1HCL Extruder - suitable replacement for filament monitor?
-
Is it appropriate to use the 1HCL to drive an extruder? I understand there is some tuning involved, but if it's suitable for XY motion maybe I'd be possible for extrusion?

Are you thinking of using the encoder feedback from a filament monitor to be the encoder for the extruder motor? If so that’s not really how the closed loop system is designed.
I believe you could use a 1HCL for an extruder but the encoder needs to be coupled directly with the stepper to be used in closed loop mode. You could run it in standard open loop mode but there would be no closed loop advantage to using the 1HCL.

Have to say I didn't think my question through very well - but thank you for the response. Not sure why I thought this had any application for filament monitoring.
I think my real question was the potential for increase in precision or fixing step loss using the closed-loop board. But then again, extruders motors don't always skip when set up properly, and are probably more likely to grind the filament, which the encoder would not help fix. Maybe a closed loop system would make gridning more probable!

Cheers dude. Sorry I miss interpreted your question. Due to losing micro stepping I think you would need a really high resolution encoder to make a closed loop stepper worth it.I think your right on the filament grinding side though!
