Since the Voron dev team recently announced the upcomming release of their new "bed probe" that probes directly on the bed with the nozzle tip.

I was a little bit curious if this type of optical sensor is supported by RRF atm?

The sensor in question is a Optek OPB990T51Z.

Maybe? I'm not sure what the function of the anode and cathode here would be.

I'm not familiar with the new Voron probing setup. Does it function as a simple switch, or is there something more?

Looks like an ordinary photo-electric barrier with an amplifying receiver. Then, anode and cathode simply are the pins of the LED. Major question: where do you put the nozzle tip with such an arrangement? 🤔

I have no idea tbh, it's setup to only need gnd, 5v and signal so apparently a "simple thing" as long as RRF is able to interpret the signal it's giving (works with klipper, so it should be open source at least. If it ain't supported by RRF right out the gate) .

Hers the video where they talk about it.

TLDR, the nozzle assembly gets it's own sliding axis retentioned by gravity and some magnets. So when probing/homing and the nozzle contacts the bed, the whole assembly lifts up and interacts with the sensor.

It's also a thread on TeamFDM about it (where i sniped the picture) .

@Exerqtor OK, so nothing fancy about. BTW: for a similar arrangement (but with separate sensor tip), I use an 'even more ordinary' photo-electric barrier, I.e. without amplifier. Works great. Using the whole nozzle assembly as a sensor induces mechanical tolerances I would better like to avoid during print - just my opinion …
