Permanently printing PLA onto an acrylic base..?
-
Hi All,
Now my laser cutter is pretty much up and running I'm going to experiment with using it to cut first layers for my large PLA prints in acrylic, mechanically mount the acrylic to the bed with fasners in removable tabs and permanently print on top. The idea is a bit like the base plate you often see used in metal printing with MIG welders.Having done some research it sounds like this may be a plausible approach, as it sounds like pla sticks well to acrylic.
I was also thinking about using the laser to score the surface of the acrylic with a hatched pattern too give some mechanical keying too.
Has anyone else tried this? Any constructive thoughts would be much appreciated!
All the best

@CNCModeller I wanted to reply that it would help to sand the acrylic surface, but you've beaten me with the laser etching method.
I found acrylic sheets crack much faster than polycarbonate, which is also CO2-cuttable.
But I'm not sure how well it deals with warping. (both materials actually...)
