Long story, short version:

Adrian Bowyer and I were working on an idea for a better electronics. Originally we were considering different processor options but then Arduino released the "Due" and at the time it felt important to work with the Arduino IDE so we went with the same MCU as the Due. After more development the Duet 0.6 was released.
