Influence of FDM parameters on part strength - Thesis work

Here is the link to the thesis by my student Vishal. It is about the effect of various FDM parameters on the strength of a part. In the end he developed an optimization routine which gives the infill type, infill density and perimeters for a 3D model given displacement/stiffness criteria. It will give a good starting point while designing parts by FDM rather than the trial and error approach.
Everyone in the forum, I appreciate your valuable feedback in this regard. I will soon send a video recording of his presentation and slides. Please feel free to share it. It will help us shape the future work in this area.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your kind words. The next step for him is to improve the thermal simulations to predict the interlayer adhesion strength. We are planning to develop it as a web app (the FE analysis will be done in the cloud using Amazon Web Services) where you upload the geometric model and get the approximate settings for your requirement. You can then use the settings in your respective slicer (KISSlicer/Slic3r/Cura).Thanks and Regards,

SM3DSorry you lost me as soon as you said "cloud" and even more so at the word "Amazon" as Tony said integration directly into slic3r would be a much preferred method.

Thanks for your feedback. It is more of our team's knowledge limitation (mechanical engineers but not developers/programmers) rather than the approach. I will soon ask my student to release the code and knowledgeable persons can integrate it with slicer. It doesn't have to be a single approach.Regards,

VasanI too am a Mechanical Engineer (and a lecturer)
I feel the request for people to upload their file into a cloud based system leaves them open to having that file distributed without their permission, no matter what protection systems are in place its always a worry, and one of the reasons I never used onshape.
If you (or the Author) of the piece are not into programming then I am pretty sure that if you were to approach any or all of the slicer devs and let them look over the code they would be more than happy to integrate it into their programs with the Authors permission of course.

SM3DThe only thing I would say is to be careful of is simplify3d as they are a "for profit" entity, and all the ramifications of providing them with your work, and their ability to make money from it, it wouldnt be the first time an inventor has lost their invention due to unscrupulous business practises, im not saying they would, but better to be "en garde"
