Fried my printer, Can I 'upgrade' to Duet?
-
Hi, new here and looking for advice. I have a printer. It's a few years old now. Dual extruder, heated bed. I was an idiot and fried the board fitting a TMC2008 the wrong way round....
So I have a dead printer and hoping I can look to upgrade to one of the duet boards to get it back to life. I've next to no electronics experience as show by my recent mistake.. I'm willing to learn though.
Could I buy and fit a duet and get my printer working again?
Thanks.

Most likely you can.
The Duet is very flexible in both hardware and software. Adapting it to work with a pre-built printer will take a little bit of research and planning and a minor amount of electrical know-how.
I suggest you start with some documentation to give you an idea of what you'll need to know before you start.

And here's a guide that goes through adapting the Ender 3 to use a Duet. It's not going to be exactly applicable to your printer, but it will give you an overview of the process.

there seems to be very little information about the inner workings of this printer.
that is going to make it more difficult and you will have to use multimeter to figure some things out.if you are up for a challenge and not shy away from learning the basics of electronics.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a read. I may be asking a few questions as a result.

Hi, there's very little about. Myself and 2 friends from work picked them up from ebay and I was the one to strip it down and test, unfortunately I didn't double check and fried the board, however I have plenty of photos of the inners and the board. I can deduce a bit from all that and with friends who have the same machine I may be able to get info from them.
I don't want to spam the board but if I did post some pictures of the printer would people offer advice? Would it be of use at all? I'm always looking to learn, part of the fun of 3D printing for me is the learning process.
Thanks.

Have at it. People here are always willing to help.

things you need to find out.
thermistors used on the hotend and the bed.
motors spec. (max current) and phase wiring
geometry used.
steps per mm for x, y,z movement. (can be determined by the number of pulleys tooth)
voltage of fans, bed and hotend. (most likely the same as power supply voltage, but can differ)if you have that information you should be able to get the basic set up going.
-
Thanks all. It's 24v based on the PSU.
2 phase motors.
Geometry is 280x150x150
Not sure on the steps but have the printer apart so could take pulleys off.Photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/RhwA8tEaJ5p2EKUj9
So I'd get the control board and touchscreen? Printer has a touchscreen but it's not great.
Cheers

no the fan says 12v.
you wont get the touchscreen working. but the duet has a web interface.
you could try fitting a paneldue where the current touchscreen is. -

it depends on how you want to use the printer. i mainly use the web interface.

The touch screen is useful for interacting directly with the printer. If you always have a laptop or computer running right by the printer maybe less useful, but I wouldn't give it up at this point.

My thought was to remove the old one and put a new one in it's place, if I need to adapt it then I'll use my other printer to make a housing etc.
So what would I need to get this alive and kicking again?

Is there a model number label on the stepper motors? If so then we can look up the characteristics of the motors, then determine whether a Duet Maestro will be sufficient or whether you need a Duet WiFi or Ethernet. If there is no label, measure the dimensions of the motors and the resistance of each winding, and we can estimate the motor specifications from those. Also measure the resistances of the temperature sensors.
Look on the fans to see whether there is a label saying what voltage they are.

the extruder has a label on it with 1.3A.
the other ones seems to be 1A. -

Thanks for being so helpful. I've added photos of the steppers and fans to the link above. Posting again for ease.

The Duet Maestro can handle those motors and it gives you option of a low cost display. The fan in your photo is 12V. There are probably another 2 or 3 fans mounted on the hot end, chances are they are 12V too. So you will need an inexpensive 24 to 12V buck converter to drive them, because your PSU is 24V.

Thanks dc42. I'll doo some reading then tomorrow as it seems I have a good way forward. I believe the printer hardware is solid so a modern controller and access to the FW would give me a good machine for the next few years. I'm sure to ask more questions, great community support here.
