IR sensor triggering too far away?

Is there any way to tell if my mini IR sensor is part of the batch that had the early-triggering failure mode, besides just behavior? I'm trying one out on my new CoreXY build with Duet2, and encountering a problem where most surfaces (wood, paper, hand) seem to trigger it transiently around ~10 mm away, and then again reliably at ~1 mm. Thinking I probably need a replacement if so.
Is that consistent with what you've seen from the faulty batch of sensors?

When and from where was it purchased?

Got it as part of the BluRolls BLV MGN Cube kit on AliExpress, arrived a few weeks ago.

We saw that fault on a few of our original sensors, before we changed the firmware to avoid it over a year ago.

I placed an order for a new unit from Printed Solid yesterday, we'll see how that one does.
