Anyways, about them slicers ... saw IceSL mentioned, looked promising a few years ago, have they lived up to their own expectations?IMO, IceSL is on the cusp of being the best slicer around. There are lots of little things missing, many of them workflow/UI/UX related. Their slicing algorithm is second to none. Much more accurate than Slic3r or anything out there.
Their licensing is awkward, but they are completely compatible with free hobbyist use -- just not for paid work without emailing and working with their institutional departments.
The support structures in IceSL are very interesting. I wish they had more traditional supports, but what they have can be good for some models, like figurines or other such prints.
The new version they just released includes a generic template for RRF based printers, so you can start slicing and printing right away (with minimal configuration to suit your printer).

IceSL reminds me of skeinforge ... the interface is so bad it hurts, but yes, it produces nice code ... it's just pain to use

You'll be happy to know they just added "service mode" which allows use from a command line.

Currently I'm still on S3D - I'm a researcher and it allows me to relatively easily hack what I need it to do. However, I'm getting more and more keen to switch to Prusa slicer in the future.
I'm also excited for Fusion to get their slicer going properly, but at the moment it's not really up to the standard of stand alone slicers imo. -

dunno how happy that will make me ... I loved skeinforge but I got spoiled in the meantime

I tried most of the free ones.
Mostly I use Simply3D but from time to time I use Cura.

@felt342 Just started using it today. Still trying to figure out settings and profiles but think it's going to be the one for me.

I used S3D for two years, I'm using superslicer now, and I'm very happy with it and get much better quality parts than S3D and CURA. CURA is slow. The only feature I missed from S3D is the ability to easily removed unwanted supports, appart from that, slicer works much much better.

SuperSlicer will soon be getting the paint-to-place supports that PrusaSlicer is currently implementing in their alpha version.
Things are looking good for the Slic3r forks. Exciting times.
