      Hello,

I currently have an E3D Toolchanger with the standard Duet2 Ethernet & Duex. I also happen to have a Duet3 Mini 5+ and set of toolboards that remain un-used from another project. You can see where this is going...

So, has anyone else fitted a Duet3 Mini & toolboards to a Toolchanger and care to share their thoughts?

I will soon be doing a partial over-haul of my TC to fit a pebble wiper, as well as switching a v6 bowden to a hemera to match all four tools. I figured if I was going to refit the electronics, now would be the time, but am weighing up the old "if ain't broke don't fix it". This wouldn't be the first 2-hour quick job that turned into a month long rebuild...

Some specific things that come to mind:

      • I know a few people have struggled to get sensorless homing to work reliably with some motors/setups with the TMC2209's. Anyone got it working reliably with the toolchanger and D3Mini? I am not against fitting physical endstop switches for X&Y (I use physical switches on all my other printers), but it would be another thing to fit/add.
      • motor noise/tuning. The moons motors aren't the quietest when you're going at speed, but not sure if they'll be any better/worse
      • Motor currents. I know I will be right at the upper end of the Mini's rating, but I will probably add a cooling fan, and have had decent results dropping the motor currents a bit - I'm not overly concerned with eeking out every bit of speed from my machine if I can get decent quality prints.
      • Anything else I've missed?

      Thanks

@engikeneer I run my tool changer at 2000mA motor current. What current do you use? If your toolchanger runs OK at 1800mA current, then using a Duet 3 Mini with fan cooling should be OK at that current.

Sensorless homing can be made to work on the Duet 3 Mini but it's a little trickier to set up because you have to switch the drivers into stealthchop mode for homing. You can always add homing switches if this turns out to be difficult on the TC.

@dc42 thanks for the quick reply. Think I am currently 1800mA, maybe 1700. I would probably do a few tests at lower currents too to see how marginal I am

@engikeneer I would use this opportunity to switch to endstop switches as I found them more repeatable on my tool changer than sensorless homing and if you want to be able to recover from power failure etc then accurate rehoming is a must.

@T3P3Tony Thanks! Yeah, I think I've been coming to that conclusion too. Might also go for the height adjustable pebble wiper in case I modify my tools in the future. Somehow I feel this is gonna be more than a Saturday afternoon tinker...
