Hi all, I'm new here. This forum was a huge help in getting my machine set up.
I built a CNC router using a Mainboard 6HC v1.0 and then added the capability to swap the spindle for a laser. Both were working as expected. I just finished tuning the laser settings for LightBurn last night, and the last thing I did was laser engrave an image into some wood, which turned out great.
Today, I tried another project and immediately noticed that the laser output looked dim and wasn't burning the wood. I canceled the job, powered down the machine, double checked my gcode (it was fine), checked connections (also fine), and then powered the machine back up. I switched it to laser mode and then had it home. As soon as the motors powered up, the laser started firing. It was the same dim flickering I was getting when I tried running the job. Previously, the laser only fired on G1/G2 moves with an S parameter, as expected.
I made no changes to the hardware or software between it working and not working. Both the VFD and the laser share the 5V PWM on out9 and the laser gets 24V and ground from OUT1. Firmware and DWC are current. The VFD worked for months, the laser for a few days.
I decided to swap back to the VFD to see if it was the laser or the Duet. As soon as I powered up the Duet and VFD, the spindle started spinning. It was unresponsive to changes to RPM or spindle on/off in DWC. It worked as expected before.
If anyone has any ideas that I can try before replacing the 6HC, I would sure appreciate any suggestions. I do have a hot air gun and arduino-controlled toaster oven, in the event there's a replaceable component.
