Ok so i have a brand new duet 2 wifi and my problem is that i had a short in my extruder cable. Now i get error on the drivers and the extruder driver chip gets very hot. I know i now have a short or several shots on the board. But i wonder if it is possible to save the card or just throw it in the trash. Thanks!

Depending on where you are located, there are people on this forum that can do repair work to these boards.

Should be able to get a warranty replacement.

With luck it's just the E0 driver (assuming it's that chip that gets hot) that needs replacing. It's not too difficult but it does require the correct tools (a SMD hot air workstation and a hotplate). I can replace a driver for £20+VAT, but the postage to/from the UK may make that uneconomic.

If you don't need all 5 drivers, you can just remove the bad one and use M569 P3 R-1 to tell RRF not to monitor it.

Is there a hackspace or makerspace local to you with hot air rework equipment?

@dc42 Its just the E0 that gets hot. But i have no idea if something else is wrong with it. Dont know if there is a workshop around here with a hot air station. Have no idea what the cost is to send from Sweden to UK. Just frustrating that it is a brand new board.

It's got to be cheaper than a replacement board. Especially if it only the one bad driver chip.

@9NeverNuts9 Sorry, I overlooked that you had a short in your extruder cable. That would disqualify the Duet from warranty replacement.

Does the stepper driver get hot even if the motor is disconnected? If not, you could just remap the extruder drive to E1, assuming you have a single nozzle printer.

First, make sure the initial problem of the short is resolved. Then, in congig.g, add the following to the beginning of your "Drives" section:

                          M584 X0 Y1 Z2 E4
                          M569 P4 S0 ; Extruder on E1

Plug extruder motor into E1, that should get you up and running.

@droftarts but can i disable the voltage to E0 or else it will go hot all the time?

If it gets hot even with the motor disconnected, you'll need to remove the chip from the board. There's no way to turn off the voltage to a singe stepper driver without removing components. At that point, you may as well get the driver chip replaced.

But before that, you need to check that nothing else is damaged, or you might be wasting your time/money. You said in your first post that you may have "several shorts on the board". What else isn't working, or what makes you think that?

@droftarts i ment that i dont know if it is just the E0 that is faulty or if it is more. I dont have the knowledge to check if something else is wrong.
