E3D SuperVolcano on SmartEffector?
-
@T3P3Tony Good to know the smart effector can handle the current. Thanks for the confirmation.
I hope the added weight won't cause any issues either.

@nxt-1 Its hard to know until you try it, not sure if anyone has done so yet. The smart effector can have it sensitivity changed by the duet if you need to, also you can change the speed of the probing move. It does not matter if the probe triggers when its not doing a probing move (actually it quite possibly will trigger when not doing a probing move with the extra mass a long way away from the smart effector!)
What i would be more concerned about will be any slight quality issues you have with the mechanical design being amplified by having the nozzle quite a lot further away from the plane of the smart effector. some will be sorted by the autocalibration but not necessarily all. On the other hand the supervolcano is all about printing with large nozzles and fat tracks so they may not be noticeable,

Keep an eye on the traces joining the heater connector with the 6-pin connector. The copper on the Smart Effector is thinner than usual in order to get a high enough resistance for the strain gauge traces, so it doesn't carry high currents well. We heard of the heater traces failing on two effectors. In response, we made the traces wider and duplicated them on both sides when we revised the design. I hope this will be sufficient to handle the 4A+ current draw of a 24V 80W heater. The traces can be bypassed using wires if necessary.

Should I be worried? I don't mind doing it as a first but I don't really want to end up with a broken effector

If your Smart Effector PCB revision is 1.3 then you should definitely add wires between the connectors to bypass the traces. If it's revision 2.0 then it may well be OK without, but add the wires if you wish. The worst that should happen if you don't is that one of the traces will fuse, at which point you can bypass them with wires.
If you do add wires then they will need to go over the edge of the effector in order to get from one side to the other. So make sure they are protected in case that edge can bump into anything.

@dc42 I am planning on ordering from E3D in the comming weeks, I will ask them what version they are sending out.

I know I am digging up an old thread here but I wanted to let anyone that happens to stroll by know that I have successfully printed with the Supervolcano + Smarteffector combo.
I did have to reduce probing speed and increase wait time after each move. The values in here are most likely to conservative, but they do the job for me:
M558 P8 F800 H7 R1 T10000 A10 S0.04
I plan to do a large-ish job this evening -6hr printing and I will report back when I have time with the results.

Thanks for the feedback!

I lowered the waiting parameter R to something like 0.5s and that seems to work fine. I also had to lower my acceleration/jerk parameters to account for the increased mass of the effector and longer moment arm under the effector.
I completed the 6hr print without major issues and also did a 28hr (2kg) print this weekend without SmartEffector problems. It would have been interesting but I did not perform any measurements and even just feel the temperature of the relevant heater traces on the effector.

Thanks for coming back to update us with your experience, I'm on the fence about trying this as well. I am on 12v currently, anyone know if that changes the recommendation on smart effector? I could always just run the heater wire down directly to the hotend and bypass the effector entirely if necessary, it would just be a bummer because I have swappable effectors between a v6 and volcano currently, so when using the v6 effector, there would be an extra wire dangling there I guess, unless I bypass it for both effectors... hmm

Oh boy, I would love to see a video or even just a picture of that thing

While I did not test this myself, I would advise against running the 12V heater current trough the smart effector pcb. This would mean running 6.66A trough the traces in the pcb.

I currently have a regular V6 mounted, but I have all the materials I need to mount the SuperVolcano on a 2nd smart effector for easier swapping. Once the pandemic has settled down I will have access to the machines I need to get the mounting the way I want is and will post pictures here.

I will see what I can do to post a video of the machine printing with it in the coming days.

If you use 12V then the heater wires should bypass the Smaty Effector completely. The 6-pin connector and 2-pin terminal block are not rated for 6.66A.
If you use 24V then you can use the connectors on the Smart Effector, but I recommend that you bypass the heater traces and vias on it using two short pieces of wire that connect the terminal block spills to the 6-pin connector spills. They will have to go around the edge of the Smart Effector, so you may need to protect them if there is anything on your machine that the effector can bump into.

Is there anything that made you more cautious since you said this in the beginning if this thread?

Not really. If your effector is version
1.32.0 and you are using 24V then the PCB traces should be adequate. -
@dc42 Both my smart effectors are rev 2 and I am indeed running 24V
