Yes, the tricky one I'm still looking for a good guide is adding a single board computer (SBC) to the Duet2Ethernet boards. With the news that firmwares beyond 3.4 are going to have features the Duet2's can't handle I'm wishing to add a SBC to my board so I can keep up.

@baenwort I don't think duet 2 hardware with SBC will be getting the new features either but I may be wrong about it.

Only in the sense that the SBC would allow for some greater flexibility, but firmware wise, no.
I wouldn't make the change to SBC mode in the hopes of something greater in the future, only if you required something it provides currently.

@baenwort there are various forum posts about small adapter-PCBs to tap off the SPI interface from the Wifi/Ethernet modules to attach a RaspberryPi SBC.

Ahh, darn.
My hope was the off boarding of calculations and functions to a SBC would enable those newer features to work but perhaps I've been misunderstanding how much the SBC offloads work from the Duet board?

It is true that some things do get offloaded to the SBC like the web interface and networking. But the limitation of the Duet2 is not so much computation as it is ROM space for the firmware features. There is no officially supported means of running an SBC on the Duet2 and no custom firmware to take advantage of that.
That said, I don't think you'll be missing out on all that much on the Duet2 for quite some time.

@johanv Hey, I've done Ethernet to WiFi successfully. If you go with buying the module mentioned earlier please note you will need to solder in headers after desoldering WiFi module. If you are in UK I do have my old headers and happy to post them to you. They are not your typical DuPont style headers, tad bit smaller (if anyone knows the type, please post in here, ta)

I have a duet Wi-Fi for some time now and also, dew to company restrictions, need to convert to ethernet. Thanks for the info so far. Before I start ripping out the ESP I am wondering if it is possible to have both wifi and ethernet. If yes, I’d just solder the posts and plug in the module. That way I could go both? Is this possible?Thanks, Jerry

@jlh WiFi module goes over the through hole pins so problem number one here, technically they are exposed underneath and you could "dead bug" style connect it but I'm sure both modules are sharing pins and that's the problem number two.
Alternatively I've seen those "chip sockets" where you plug in ESP8266MOD chips potentially could make hybrid board of sorts...Or simply get little WiFi access point which does 2.4GHz and stick it in the metal biscuit jar thing to reduce it's range to one machine pretty much.

@kr15_uk we supply the pin sockets and mounting post with the Ethernet module.

@jlh it's not possible to have both WiFi and Ethernet on a Duet 2. But if you remove the WiFi module you can then install either the external antenna module or the Ethernet module.

I wasn’t thinking about the shared pins. I guess you’re right. There would be no way to select either the one or other. I am aware of the hardware part and was thinking about the „dead bug“ style to save the hastle of desoldering the wifi.
