Unplugging and plugging PanelDue (7i) while power is on is ok??

Is it ok to unplug and plug the 4 wires going to the PanelDue while the printer is on? Any risk? I'm dabbling the with the firmware for it, so need to plug and unplug it a lot. And not all menus and buttons are available when plugged via USB.

Additionally, is it ok to connect and disconnect the USB cord to the paneldue while the 4 connectors are connected? Is that ok to do while uploading new firmware to the paneldue?

I believe it's been discussed before that it is OK to hot swap the PanelDue.

I've unplugged and replugged it to flash and test a boot logo many times with no issues.

Thanks Phaedrux. Do you know if this is ok with the microSD card as well?

I would not unplug an SD card while it is powered up inside the Duet. I don't think there is a way to safely unmount it as you can with a PC. That's a really good way to get corrupted files.

As with any electrical device that is not specifically designed to be hot-pluggable, it isn't recommended. But in practice it doesn't seem to cause any problems, probably because of the current-limiting resistors and protection diodes in the Din and Dout lines.

Yes.

As the firmware is uploaded over USB, if you do that then the firmware update will fail and you will end up with partially-installed firmware.

Hi DC, I know this is old but I wanted to clarify. I think he was asking if it is OK to update the paneldue while it's still connected to the duet and USB. Not if it's OK to unplug the USB while updating firmware.

Can you confirm it is OK to have it plugged into USB and the duet all while updating firmware?

Yes, that's OK if it works for you. I generally find that updating PanelDue while it is connected to a Duet works if the Duet is powered at the time, but not if it is unpowered.
