How do I configure my default fan?



  • Hey! I'd like to have my Heater 2 port configured to be my 4010 Hotend cooling fan which turns on when my H1 is over 45C and my fan2 port to be my hotend cooling fan.
    However, I don't really understand how the parameters work in the g-code commands section.
    My duet maestro has the RRF2.05 firmware installed.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    With RRF 2.05 or 2.05.1 I think the following should work to configure fan 3 as a thermostatic hot end fan:

    M307 H2 A-1 C-1 D-1 ; disable heater 2
    M106 P3 A2 H1 T45 S1 ; Fan 3 is on heater 2 output, thermostatically controlled by heater 1

    @maroonds First, test the fans on an 'always on' fan pin header, to check they are working.

    H0 is 'HEATED BED', H1 is 'E0 HEATER' and H2 is the 'E1 HEATER'. So connect your fan (checking polarity) to the E1 HEATER screw terminals, or the pins behind it (+ve is on the left, GND on the right):

    To test the fan, use the gcode @dc42 suggests, but change the M106 line to:
    M106 P3 A2 H-1 S1
    This should turn the fan on at 100%, ignoring the heater, and should show up in DWC to control it.

    For the part cooling fan, do you want this to be Fan 0, but connected to Fan2? Try:
    M106 P0 A22 H-1 S1
    This should map fan0 to logical pin 22, which should be fan2. I think!

    Thanks! My part cooling fan is now working, but my hotend cooling fan (connected to e1) is still not working...

    @maroonds Did you test the hot end fan on the 'always on' fan pins? Did a fan control show up in DWC?

  • @droftarts Fan control shows up but only for my part cooling fan. The fan turns on when I connect it to the always on pin but I'd like it to only turn on when the temperature is above 45c since it's kind of loud.

    @maroonds Can you post how your fans are set up at the moment? You can also check by sending M106 P[fan number], though this doesn't tell you what pins it's using.

    You haven't disabled Heater 1, as @dc42 suggested, with:
    M307 H2 A-1 C-1 D-1 ; disable heater 2

    Also, your tool is using F0, which is the part cooling fan.
    For the hot end fan, you don't need to specify it in the tool, as it's going to be set to thermostatically watch Heater 1 anyway. As you don't have any other fans, you may as well call this 'Fan1' or P1. So, change your config.g to:

    M106 P0 A22 H-1 S0
    M307 H2 A-1 C-1 D-1 ; disable heater 2
    M106 P1 A2 H1 T45

    Fans that are linked to tools won't show up in DWC until the tool is active. Fans that are thermostatic won't show up at all. Fan visibility can be turned on and off in the 'Current Job > Status' page; click on 'change visibility' in Fans section.

    Is there any reason you're not using the other PWM fan pins?

  • I had to change my pwm ports because I shorted the ones I was previously using.
    Btw. I tried it with your adjustments but my hotend fan is still not turning on when my heater reaches 50 degrees.

    @maroonds You made the changes to config.g, saved it, then reset the Duet? Run M98 P"config.g" and see if it generates any errors.

    What happens if you send:
    M307 H2 A-1 C-1 D-1
    M106 P1 A2 H-1 S1

  • @droftarts It doesn't create any errors and after I pasted the other commands nothing happens and the fan still doesn't turn on at 50 C

    @maroonds Can you post a picture of your board showing wiring? How are you connecting the fan to E1 HEATER, on the pins or screw terminals? Have you checked polarity?

    The command from my previous post, M106 P1 A2 H-1 S1, should turn it on full speed straight away, to test. To be thermostatic controlled, needs to be M106 P1 A2 H1 T50. But it needs to be working with the first M106 command, before setting it to thermostatic control.     Screw terminals. I checked the voltages with a multimeter and it has around 0.5V with this command sent: M106 P1 A2 H-1 S1
    And yes the polarity is right

    @maroonds try S255 . Any reason you rolled back from RRF3? Where the fans not working? Setting the part cooling fan with P0 and not thermostatic or bound to a tool should put it under slicer or manual control.

    As this is a Maestro, I’m not sure if pin A2 is correct for Heater 1. It should be. @dc42 ?

    But how can I make it thermostatic controllable?
    This is my current setup:

    The M307 command must come before the M106 P3 A2 command.
