I am about to employ a Duet Wifi on my home made printer, before i start could somebody give me a couple of pointers so i don't need to do everything twice.

I would like to know as the Duet Wifi is not pin compatible with the Duex4 is it software compatible and thus i will be able to make a lead up to do it, I have read conflicting reports about this so am a little confused?

Or the other option how have others gone about adding a third extruder (preferably with all the nice software control of the original board)?

The Printer will not in the first instance require the third extruder but i don't want to make everything then re do it all when later i decide i want to add it.

AFAIK, the firmware currently assumes all the stepper drivers are the same, so it may not work.

If you don't need the third extruder immediately, then the DueX5 expansion board may be available by the time you do need it.

The latest firmware for the Duet WiFi assumes that drivers beyond the first 5 are not TMC2660 drivers. So if you make up a lead to use a DueX4 with a Duet WiFi then it should work.

When we start making the DueX5 and other expansion boards for the Duet WiFi, the main firmware will interrogate the expansion board to establish whether it provides additional TMC2660 drivers.

I am working on it right now and aim to have the first prototype hardware on order next week. I don't want to commit to a date for production ready boards yet but it's my highest priority right now.

That job has already been taken - you'll have to get in the queue 🙂
