I've probably damaged 4 duet boards from using my meter incorrectly.

I remember that voltage is measured across a circuit and current is measured in line.

But, for some reason, I kept putting into VDC mode and connecting it right up to the 2 pins. Then poof.

I don't know why my brain goes on autopilot and does this. Anybody have any suggestions to help train my brain to use the right settings?

@gnydick You do set the meter for Volts DC mode and connect across any two pins and you should safely get a reading of the voltage between those two pins.

Are you maybe setting for Amps?

Youtube should show you a million point five videos on how to use a multimeter.

And ask away here. There are many who can help you. We've all been there.

@gnydick What's your method for measuring across pins?

Measuring directly at the pins with the probes is risky because it's very easy touch the probes by accident and cause a short.

When I need to measure something on the board (e.g. voltage at fan header) I plug breadboard jumper wires into each pin to extend them, then I measure them far away from eachother.

@gnydick, what voltmeter are you using? Can you post a link to the model or a picture?

@hebigt I use the leads coming off the board so I can spread them apart for safety.
