@Herve_Smith none of the boards running RRF, duet or teamgloomy ones will currently support the fly-sb2040

@Herve_Smith we have an experimental build for RP2040-based CAN-connected tool boards in the 3.5-dev branch of the Duet3Expansion and CoreN2G projects. However there is no specific build configuration for the Fly-SB2040 board. so you would need to create one yourself.

We have yet to do torture tests on CAN-FD/RP2040-based boards, so we don't yet know whether they will provide the required comms reliability. We plan to run such tests soon. The existing Fly RP2040 boards use a lower speed CAN transceiver that we use on Duets, and although it appears to work in our initial testing, that could be problematic e.g. at higher than normal temperatures, especially as RP2040-based CAN implementations do not implement transmitter delay compensation.

@dc42 the SB2040 is a different implementation than the board you have seen. It may well require hardware changes before it would be suitable. for example it has a SIT1040TK as a CAN transceiver

@Herve_Smith Theres no current plans to support CAN 2.0. As dc42 mentioned, they are working on bring CAN-FD to RP2040 based toolboards.
With the teamgloomy port, none of the STM32F4 MCU's support CAN-FD. Only the STM32H7 MCU's do.
At the moment, the supported list of boards to connect over CAN-FD is

                • Duet 3 6HC (in expansion board mode - M954)
                • Duet 3 6XD (in expansion board mode - M954)
                • Duet 3 Mini 5+ (in expansion board mode - M954)
                • Fysetc Big Dipper (in expansion board mode - M954)
                • Another STM32H723 board (in expansion board mode - M954)
                • Another STM32H743 board (in expansion board mode - M954)
                • Duet 3 1XD
                • Duet 3 3HC
                • Duet 3 1HCL
                • Duet 3 1LC
                • Duet 3 Distribution Board
                • Sammy-C21

The only toolboards are the Duet 3 1LC. Fysetc has cloned them but they currently have no stock of the MCU to manufacture any more

@Herve_Smith i've mounted my toolboard to the back of the X carriage. Theres enough room for it not to come into contact with the z chain.

@Herve_Smith that's nice looking. I need to revise my toolhead location as I plan on switching to tap and I won't have the rear mounting position available any more.

@R4ffers the lightweight x rail is great. i temporarily had a carbon fibre one but that was awful. worth the investment

I just drew up a modified version of the "tap" that is lighter, uses less hardware and uses a pair of cross roller guides instead of a linear rail for stability
