How to Direct Connect Micro Switch to Duet 3 Mini 5?

on my IDEX printer i have ends stops on all axes. but i want to add more general purpose micro switches to do various things. i am unable to successfully make a simple switch work that isnt already configured as an endstop.
i assumed i would use M950 J0 io0.in and simply directly connect a micro switch to a spare IO port, however when i trigger the switch, it shorts out the board and basically the mainboard resets anytime i press the switch.
i am using a bare bones switch, no resistors or LEDs but only the raw switch connected to 5V, GND, In. Is this not possible in this fashion?

@RogerPodacter I guess you've wired it wrong. If it's a simple switch, it should be connected to ioX.in and gnd only.

@jay_s_uk but i have the wiring identical to my other 3 switches which are configured as endstops. it should be identical i thought.

You've defined a pin, but have you defined what to do with it by setting up a trigger? It may be defaulting to an emergency stop.

of course you were right. i had wiring backwards. reversing my wiring fixed the issue.
