Smoke is bad
-
So I plugged in a new stepper motor cable between the board and motor, went to test the motion, motor made a sound like it wasn’t connected right as if one pair needs to be flipped and then small flash of light, puff of smoke from driver chip and now the driver has a hole FML

@Adamfilip
There are 2 types of people that build printers- Those that have fried a driver
- Those that are going to fry a driver
There are a few people on here that do repairs
I've done one myself using chipQuick but it's not fun if you don't have all the gear -
@Adamfilip ... FML ????

@OwenD, since I am in the process of building a printer, could you comment on what causes a driver failure? I was under the impression that the only thing that can fry a driver are plugging/unplugging with power on and setting the stepper current too high. None of this sounds like what happened here.
I am also assuming that the cable wasn't shorted somehow.
I would really like to avoid having to replace a driver ...... -
@OwenD There are other drivers I can use and will just ignore this burnt one, board still works.
just doesnt make sense why it happened at all. -
@jens55
Unplugging or plugging under load is usually the cause so I guess a bad connection making/breaking connection could do it.

@OwenD ... thanks! for confirming that plugging/unplugging can destroy the driver. I had not thought about crimps (duuuhhh). I will try and remember to double check and triple check the crimps.

@Adamfilip the drivers on the Duet 2 are quite tough in regard to having motors connected or disconnected while powered up. I posted a video about this a few years ago. Even so, the Duet should always be powered off before connecting or disconnecting anything to it.
However they don't take kindly to having the motor connected incorrectly, because then they can't control the current. So check that you have identified the motor phases, and connected one phase to the two pins at one end of the connector on the Duet, and the other phase to the other two pins. In particular, if the cable is detachable from the motor as in your case, the wire colours can't be trusted because there are two different conventions about how the phases are wired to the 6-pin connector on the motor.
Also check that there isn't a short circuit between any of the wires. This can happen if a strand of wire escapes while you are crimping the connector and manages to touch an adjacent pin.
We do see a small number of "infant mortality" driver failures, so if neither of the above is the cause and the Duet is new, we would replace it under warranty.

@dc42 Thanks
I had just purchased a new Stepper cable and with power off i plugged into the stepper and driver plug.
I dont mess with things when power is on. I do need to check the new cable incase it has any stray hairs causing a short. -
@Adamfilip unfortunately, wire order on the stepper side is not standardized. When I fried my driver, it was from swapping steppers which had incompatible wiring (plus wayyyy too much current). Since then I ways triple check phases before conmecting.

@oliof yep I double checked and sure enough wire color was messed up and phases were in wrong order.
only had power at 950ma. works now on different driver
