I took the sand off the table, replaced it with a plastic sheet and a canvas panel, dropped some acrylic paint on it, and ran a pattern with the ball rolling through the paint.

This is just the second attempt at painting with it. I'm still working on the technique in prep for the MakerFaire Milwaukee in November.

@mrehorstdmd That's really slick looking! I've been wanting to build a sand table at home for a while. I really need to get back to working that project.

@mrehorstdmd if that's only your second attempt, I forward to seeing one when you have the technique down too! plus there are loads of things to try, magnetic paint, UV, glow in the dark etc!

@Sindarius I recommend using servomotors for your build. It costs a bit more to do it, but the machine is so much more capable when you do, and it's a lot more fun to watch it drawing at 500 mm/sec than 50 mm/sec (typical) with stepper drive. The motors I used work right out of the box without any tuning of operating parameters.

@jumpedwithbothfeet At some point I want to try using cement instead of baking soda, and when the pattern is finished drawing, mist it with water so it will harden and hopefully preserve the pattern in 3 dimensions.

Mix it with pigment-powder and make coloured tiles.
