@dc42 well, I’ve attempted a chip replacement. Despite some lifted tracks there’s minimal remedial rework needed as far as I can tell…
I have no intention of powering up until I’ve dealt with the obvious bridge.

@dc42 it was becoming too hot to touch before the SD slot replacement; hence the heatsink
To answer @Phaedrux, it would be hard to calibrate without configuration provided by the microSD card in normal circumstances.
I expect the extruder could be configured in the console; and its thermistor connected to provide a figure for those commands.
I tried pointing a laser thermometer at the heatsink to get some idea of how hot the MCU was getting before disconnecting power when it reached the 80s per M122
@dc42 if M122 reports that the board has reset itself via software and/or that the MCU temperature is around/above 100°C the Duet is in a bad way?
@dc42 was part of a printer listing; operative state unspecified
@dc42 I'm not sure it's ever read uSD cards since I've had it
Hopefully this morning's soldering is still viable ![endoscope view of Duet SD socket]()

A new board is outside my current ad hoc budget ...
Have replaced the microSD socket; the problem persists.
@doctrucker the Duet seems unable to read any microSD cards presently.
@dc42 it is There’s a town here which shares a name with a village down there…
@dc42 or ?
I try to seat the card properly; have used canned air to blow out to no effect.
Reflowing the soldered joints is next on the list; spare parts are in the post... in case the hot air melts the plastic part
@dc42 I rechecked messages I was seeing before the upgrade;
Can't open 0:/sys/homex.g to read from. Error code: 3
Macro file homex.g not found.
Will take a close-up when next in the same room as the board.
@doctrucker it seems one cannot invoke bossa[c] without erasing the CPU : ]
bossac invocation, RepRapPro docs on archive.org
Having got 1.23 dated 2018-12-24b1
installed (and booting), all I get for the cards I've been trying is: Cannot initialise SD card 0: Card is unusable
I have tried 128Mb, 1Gb and 32Gb cards
I expect I should be trying a different capacity/class microSD card.
Unfortunately, bossa refuses to connect to the board on 3 separate platforms; Linux, Mac and Windows.
Arduino IDE on Mac let me run the M115 which told me the firmware version, and that a G28 X0 returned: Can't open 0:/sys/homex.g not found.
I have been unable to backup current obsolete firware, nevermind install the latest for a Duet 0.6.
Having difficulty creating a card the second–hand, ebay–acquired board will read; is there anywhere I can acquire one guaranteed readable?
