    • RE: Tevo Little Monster - 80 mm + Direct Drive and Remote Fans

      @martinv

Hey Martin, I haven't tried playing around with the carriages yet. I don't think I'll bother with that, as I'd probably just upgrade to linear rails instead. I was contemplating that on this recent set of upgrades, but haven't decided if I'll bother.

The best change I've made so far was upgrading to a 0.9° stepper motor on the drive axes. It really made the prints come out quite a bit nicer. The switch to a whambam PC sheet also helped a lot.

Getting rid of the flying extruder in this recent set of mods has also helped the quality quite a bit, as the fast prints would make the Bondtech knockoff I had before swing around a bunch, causing artifacts at speed. I even noticed this during my autolevelling, the extruder moving would sometime make the levelling irregular, so I had to have a pause before each probe. It was annoying.

For high quality prints before, I used to stick to 30mm/s. Now 50-60 mm/s seems to be fine. I haven't pushed it much faster. I'm pretty sure I can move up to 100 mm/s and get decent quality now, but honestly most of my mods were to make the printer quieter rather than faster.

I'll let you know when I figure out my Orbiter mount. It should be in the next month or so when I get some time.

      @martinv

I've also got a Little Monster. I think they're fairly popular on here because a lot of people replaced the stock electronics on them.

They're very good at making large vases.

That's a cool mod. What do you use the big monster for, and how much print height do you get out of it?

@moocowsia I guess you had to raise the LGX so much, because of the extruder motor sticking out?
I know these Orbiter and LGX extruders are en vogue but I still prefer my "tall and slim" sherpa mini

I mostly just put the riser on it so I have a bit of room to adjust the heatsink under the mounting plate. I could probably get away with a smaller rise, but I only had 5mm and 20mm brass standoffs to pick from.

Based on geometry, I could probably get away with zero standoff on the extruder, but I couldn't figure out how to assemble it.

I've got a kit of various standoffs coming from AliExpress in the next month or two, so I might rejig it then. I've also got a Orbiter and another (my fourth) smart effector to do up as well. We'll see how that all goes together soon. I might be able to ditch the brass and simplify it on the second attempt.

@moocowsia you can post links after you have a couple of upvotes to avoid people posting spam here as a first post.

No worries. Thanks for the upvote. I've added the links to the printables parts.

    • Tevo Little Monster - 80 mm + Direct Drive and Remote Fans

      Hi All,

My holiday project for this year has been converting my Tevo Little Monster with Smart Effectors for use with a direct drive, getting rid of the last of the original knockoff parts, and switching to a remote blower fan to make my printer much quieter. I used Asyborgs 80mm adapter for the smart effector, and did up the remaining parts to mount a direct drive extruder and cooling.

Previously my flying extruder always shook around a bunch and seemed to make artifacts in the print regularly. It also didn't work particularly well with soft plastics. The direct drive mount shakes much less, seems to print better and faster, and gave me a good chance to remove the heatsink fan from the effector.
I've now got the part cooling fan (berd air pump) and the heatsink blower fan remote mounted in my printer table, where I don't hear them. It's great. Super quiet.

I had to design a few new parts including:

      • 80mm Carriage Adapter - link
      • LGX Lite Adapter Plate - link
      • Berd air pipe carriers for smart effectors - link
      • CPAP hose carrier for smart effector - link
      • CPAP hose joiners
      • Blower Fan Mount

Other stuff I've made for this is up on my printables profile now.

    • RE: 24V PWM Fans

@zapta I'm running all Duet hardware. Duet 2 Wifi, and a smart effector. I ditched the stock electronics before I assembled the printer. The printer frame, PSU, and heated bed is about all that was worth keeping from the original kit.

I've got a 50mm axial fan, which seems to work somewhat with PWM and isn't annoyingly loud. It's mostly just the blowers that area a headache.

I've been planning on getting a second smart effector for use with a Volcano nozzle once Spool3d starts carrying the v3, so having to get 6 fans with 24v and PWM is a bit problematic if I can't be sure they'll work. It seems like the buck convertor might be the best option, which is frankly kind of surprising.

A Berd-Air also looks like it might be a good option. It should be fairly easy to switch between smart effectors and they appears to have a 24V PWM model. It sounds like it might be a little on the noisy end without an enclosure though. Anyone have any opinions on those? The shipping isn't cheap on them, but they look like they provide decent adjustability and low effector mass.

    • 24V PWM Fans

Does anyone have a line on some decent 24V PWM controlled fans that ship to Canada? I'm having a hard time finding ones that work with PWM and are 24V.

I'm looking for a 50mm axial fan and 2x 4010 blowers. My stock Tevo fans died, and seem to be difficult to replace directly without spending $80.

    • RE: Premade Cable Ends

As with most issues that take a while to fix, it was a combination problem. The solid core cable was part of the issue. The other part was that the sensitivity on the smart effector was too low. I set it up to 225.

    • Premade Cable Ends

      Hello Everyone,

I'm having a hard time getting a consistent connection out of the Smart Effector. I seem to get about half of my bed to probe before one of the connectors wiggles loose, causing the effector to crash into the bed until the belt skips. Usually this happens a few times, and then the 6-blink pattern shows up once on the LED.

I'm pretty sure this means that my 8-pin molex connector isn't in good contact. The white LEDs stay on consistently, and I don't seem to have other issues with power, so I think the 6-pin one is fine.

Has anyone got a source for pre-made 8-pin molex connectors with a decent length pigtail? I've seen the ones posted for the 6-pin, but not the 8-pin molex kk. I could probably get it working with a bit more rework, but would rather just buy a premade wire at this point.

I've seen these, but the pigtail is pretty short. https://www.pcboard.ca/kf2510-prewired-connector

I think the source of the issue might be that I'm using solid core Cat 6 cable, which is a bit stiff, and seems to exert some torque on the connector.

I'm in Canada, if anyone knows a source around here.

    • RE: Smart Effector v3 Step Model

@dc42 Any idea when this one will be available in Canada? It looks like I might need a replacement. I think may have scratch the strain gauge traces on my V2.

I'd much rather buy a V3 if they're improving upon that issue.
