Is the LED on the expansion board flashing in sync with the one on the main board? If so then the cable is ok.

Have you set the address switches on the expansion board to address 1?

@dc42 I tried changing the switches , but no joy. I'll have to check the lights in the morning. Which ones should I be looking at? Colour etc?

The expansion board cannot be set to 0 in use (only to trigger a firmware update) in the configuration "0.n" refers to the mainboard.

There is red LED on the main that flashes at about 1Hz. There is also a red LED on the expansion board which should also flash in synchronisation with the LED on the main board.

@deckingman The red light on the board flashes quickly, faster than that of the duet 3.

Checked and adjusted the switches set to 1.

I have even bought some cat 5 and rj11 plugs, and a crimper.

Still get the same error messages

@mattbaker I'd say that you probably need to do a reset of the board and possibly flash the firmware but I'll leave @dc42 to talk you through that procedure and/or suggest something else.

If it's flashing continuously at about twice the speed of the main board, that means it isn't receiving CAN messages.

Only the two middle pins of the RJ11/RJ12 cables need to be connected. The colours must be in the same order at bot ends. Flat cables often have the colours reversed. Round cables normally don't and should be OK.

Make sure you have the two CAN termination jumpers fitted correctly on the expansion board.

Problem appears to be solved. I was using 6 pins, wired straight through. Then I read in another thread only the 4 middle were retired, I grabbed a 4 pin, and red lets flash in sync. And m122 b1 gives a response now.

However didn't realise using a 6 pin cable wouldn't work.

I'm glad you got it working; but I think your 6-pin cable is faulty. The unused 4 pins on each CAN connector on the expansion board are connected to the same pins on the other connector, but not to anything else.

Dang... now i bought a short twisted adsl 2 cable for 6hc 1.0 and a 1.0 Extension Board.
I've to reorder a non twisted one now?

Twisted is fine. It's crossed that you don't want. As long as the colours are in the same order at each end you'll be fine

Twisted pair cables are what we recommend. It's the flat non-twisted cables that tend to have the pins swapped between the ends.

Note that a flat cable with RJ12 plugs on each end, with the same side 'up' on each end, DOES cross the center pins. Note the 3 to 4 and 4 to 3 below. This is a very common configuration for 'telephone' cables and will NOT work on the Duet CAN.
