Slic3r dormant. PrusaSlicer most common choice?

I was using the development release of Slic3r, but appears all development has ground to a halt.

PrusaSlicer would seem the natural choice, potentially with Cura coming in second? I would have liked to support a project that wasn't so closely linked to a specific manufacturer but not sure what would fit that bill while still having a reasonable user base?

@DocTrucker I like Cura- lots of control, and if you print in vase mode, doesn't leave a seam in the print. I switch between Cura and Prusa Slicer. There are others out there.

@DocTrucker PrusaSlicer is your best bet if you're already accustomed to / resigned to the quirky UI of Slic3r. Alternatives worth mentioning include:

• SuperSlicer (mentioned elsewhere in the thread) has a similar UI and is nice, but hasn't gotten a lot of attention lately.
• OrcaSlicer (https://github.com/SoftFever/OrcaSlicer/releases/) is attempting to take the best of PrusaSlicer and Bambu's UI, as I understand it. I'm keeping an eye on it but sticking with PS for now.
• Cura is super powerful, also very popular, but will take some commitment to make the leap over to it in terms of re-learning how to configure and control what's going on.

@DocTrucker if you haven't started to migrate to Cura, I suggest you don't. IMO they're moving forward implementing useless and Ultimaker-centered features (which is their right of course) such as the multi-material-blending stuff, while neglecting the very real usability and feature weaknesses such as slow and laggy interface or the inability to place seams in any way that is logical and/or aesthetic.

OrcaSlicer was mentioned as the open source project that tries to find the best in Prusaslicer and Bambu Studio (which in turn is derived from Prusaslicer and incorporates some Cura features, such as an alternative slicing engine). It's more aimed towards open source printers and tinkerers such as ourselves, and it seems to be the spititual successor to Superslicer which also seems to have been all but abandoned. I've had very good results with little tweaking from OrcaSlicer.

Thanks for the information. Looks like OrcaSlicer and SuperSlicer will make it onto my workstation!

It has? Haven't been a nightly release on github or any word from Merill in the SuperSlicer discord for well over two months now 😅
