Turned out to be a Z-offset in my slicer I dismissed because I needed it before.
All is working as it should now.
Thank you for your help, and the debugging assist!

ok, I'm dumb... z-offset in the slicer was the culprit.
now mostly printing... have some tuning to do... but working.

@crpalmer said in Tevo LM recent conversion and z step issues:
M350 X16 Y16 Z16 E16 I1 ; configure microstepping with interpolation
M92 X80.00 Y80.00 Z80.00 E403.00 ; set steps per mm'
Adjusted back to these settings.
printing one now... this is going to be funny.
@crpalmer I have reduce the extruder steps all the way down to 160... still happening...
Starting to rule out overextrusion.

@crpalmer I am leaning toward overextrusion now as well.
@dougal1957 I have not. Assumed they were what was listed on the printer specs. You think they are 16's?
@dougal1957 Stock 20 tooth pulleys.
@t3p3tony like the Z steps aren't moving appropriately. As soon as the second layer starts, you can hear the hotend dragging across the print, eventually either breaking the extruded material free of the bed, or creating a very deformed print. This still feels like either an extrusion issue, or a z steps being off issue.
but first problem is definitely fixed.
@the_gibson It is better, but definitely still dragging the print. first layer goes down great.
