Connecting an expansion board - duet 3

I have a phone cable with a 6 pin connector at each end and only the 2 middle wires connected. Can I use this to connect the expansion board?

If not, are the connectors RJ12?

Looks like the cables swap between pins 3 and 4 so no good.

Can someone confirm the correct connector?

RJ11 twisted pair cables to connect the expansion board(s). When connecting a version 0.5 Duet 3 main board to an expansion board, the wires must be crossed. When connecting a version 0.6 or later Duet 3 main board to an expansion board, or connecting two expansion boards together, the cable wiring must be straight-through.

I have successfully used off the shelf RJ11 cables. They just need all pins, and the ancient telco swap of the center pins (which nearly all pre-made cables have). Best is cables made with twisted pair (not just parallel wires).

Specifically, this one works: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011SS7LYU It is a High Speed ADSL twisted pair cable.

It's a bit late now but for anyone stumbling across this thread in the future, what to look for is High Speed ADSL 2 cables. This was @dc42s recommendation to me. Kenable do nice range of flexible ones which are good for situations where boards might be mounted on moving gantries.

Yes. It should really be twisted pair, which you can find sold as "ADSL high speed" or "ADSL high quality" cables. However, if the cable length is short, you can get away with non-twisted pair cables. The wiring is straight-through unless you have a Duet 3 v0.5 prototype board.

look closely at the ends, are the colours in the same order? Telephone cables like to swap things up.

Is the LED on the expansion board flashing in sync with the one on the main board? If so then the cable is ok.

Have you set the address switches on the expansion board to address 1?

@dc42 I tried changing the switches , but no joy. I'll have to check the lights in the morning. Which ones should I be looking at? Colour etc?

The expansion board cannot be set to 0 in use (only to trigger a firmware update) in the configuration "0.n" refers to the mainboard.

There is red LED on the main that flashes at about 1Hz. There is also a red LED on the expansion board which should also flash in synchronisation with the LED on the main board.

@deckingman The red light on the board flashes quickly, faster than that of the duet 3.

Checked and adjusted the switches set to 1.

I have even bought some cat 5 and rj11 plugs, and a crimper.

Still get the same error messages

@mattbaker I'd say that you probably need to do a reset of the board and possibly flash the firmware but I'll leave @dc42 to talk you through that procedure and/or suggest something else.
