    Just started to build my new printer and the first question mark just came up πŸ˜‰

    I connected a RPI4 to the Duet 3 and woule like to drive a 5V fan for cooling the RPI (because I have a spare Noctua lying around). Since theRPI GPIO pins are occupied by the ribbon cable I'm wondering where to get 5V for the fan. Is it possible to connect it to the Duet 3 Laser/VFD pins or is it a bad idea and I better should get another 12V fan for the SBC?

    Thanks, Martin

      It is possible for always on fan, for an always on fan you can use any 5v pin on any of the other connectors as well (being IO_n and DOTSTAR led connection) or you can combine the 5v pin with out1 to out9 negative pin to enable fan control.

      Edit: I soldered my low noise always on fan to the 5v pin on the USB header (i.e. under the Pi PCB) as this can be turned off in software on the pi, but I haven't done temperature contol yet as it is so quiet. You could also cut a USB cable and connect the fan to the stripped wires there. Main motivation was to avoid adittional wiring between the Pi and the Duet as well as ensuring Pi has cooling if I for some reason only power on the Pi.

        Alright, just want to do it the right way. Also thought about soldering it to the RPI. I need to think about it. Let's see where it goes to.... πŸ™‚

        Thanks!

            In general yes, but then my RPI case doesn't fit anymore because the height of the ribbon connector increases. My printer is currently running 24x7 and I just want to avoid printing the case again. Need to finish all the other printer parts.

              it also means no heat sinks so increased cooling need when idle?

                @bearer

                I don't run mine with heat sinks had no issues with temps?
                Only covers the cpu so heat sinks can be placed on the other chips

                        this one might be interesting for quite a few people here! πŸ‘
                        (was tempted to get one in order to de-jankify the PoE / Duet mix, but realized it won't fly without extending the 4 PoE pins as well. will have a think, or ask jlcpcb to send something similar:))

                          5v feed to the duet3 is also disabled

                            For what it’s worth the DOSTAR LED connection works to give 5V as someone else already mentioned. I use that to power a pi touch screen.
