    RRF can't "see" any of the stepper drivers, over night.

      I seriously have no idea whats happened. I started a printer yesterday evening, that started like it should, homed and started printing and finished just like one would expect it to, no errors or weird stuff at all.

      So today when i'm about to start another print suddenly I suddenly get G1: G0/G1: insufficient axes homed error messages no matter what i try to do. No matter what axis I try to home (changes between "G28, G28 X, G28 Y & G28 Z" errors depending on what homing opperation i try to do ofc).

      I have NOT made any changes to any of my config files, and i've sifted through them trying to pinpoint where on earth the issue is. But I can't find anything wrong.

      Ran a M122 diagnose and the response was shocking:

      It's just like all the steppers drivers have just suddenly decided to die/not work.

        @Exerqtor So what has happened between the end of your last print and the situation you have just described? Was it left powered on? If so what is your power like? Any chance that you had a power outage or brownout? How is your printer powered, single 24V supply, separate 24V and 5V, USB? What happens if you power cycle the board, do the drivers show up?

          Cause of events:

          • After the print finished yesterday the printer stood idle over night.

          • First thing I did once I got up today was to adjust the tool Z offset since i noticed it was to large when I started the print yesterday and had to babystep it 0.050mm closer to the bed. Once I'd done the G31 adjustment and saved the changes in config.g i restarted the printer using the Dialouge window one gets after saving changes to config.g.

          • With the printer booted up, I set the bed to 110°C and let the printer heat up and soak for 20min (approx) before I planned to tram the bed.

          • Jumped on F360 and did some CAD work while it was heating, after the 20minutes had passed I issued a G32 through DWC on my computer, and went back to finishing up the CAD without checking how the tramming went since I assumed it would finish as "allways".

          • Another couple minutes goes by, I finish of the CAD and export the file to stl, slice & send it to the printer ("upload & start print" in PrusaSlicer).

          • I leave the office and walk out to the printer to check how the first layer goes down to see if the Z-offset adjustments I made earlier were good, to find the printer standing still.

          • Checked on PanelDue, and saw that it was still unhomed and the heaters had gotten turned off. Checked in console and saw the error messages.

          • After that I started troubleshooting, and that's where i'm at now based on my last post.

          No power outages or reboots / power events happened over night, no issues logged in either my smarthome system OR in the RRF debug log. The fist event after the print finishing up last night is when i restart the print after doing the config.g changes.

          The printer is powered by a single (genuine) Mean Well UHP-200-24 and using the boards build-in 5V regulator. The bed heater runs on 230v AC, so 200W should be enough (and has been enough without any issues for well over a year).

          If I power cycle nothing new happens.

            @Exerqtor Probably one for @Phaedrux. Given that you made changes to your config.g file it might be worth posting the current state of that and also running M98 p"config.g" to check for any errors. Also are all of the power lights showing on the board?

                  (Regarding the plug on IO_0 / PanelDue being a JST connector, it's just temporary until I get some 5pin molex connectors.)

                  I should add that I've tried to reinstal RFF 3.5b4 with no luck, roll back to 3.5b2 with no luck and now i'm back on 3.5b4 since it didn't help.

                  Could totally whiping the firmware of the board and doing a fresh install with bosa maybe be a way to go? 🤔

                    @Exerqtor as RRF has failed to find any of the stepper drivers, it looks as though UART communication with them has failed. Here are some possible reasons for that:

                    • No power reaching the stepper drivers. Power is reaching the VIN measurement circuit, so the fuse should be OK.
                    • Something has gone wrong with the circuitry that interfaces to the drivers via UART.
                    • One of the drivers has failed and in doing so has shorted out the UART signal, thereby interrupting the comms with the other drivers too.

                    Does any of the TMC2209 stepper driver chips show signs of damage?

                      @dc42 I've had a good look at them and i can't see any damage, misscoloring, cracks etc. That goes for the rest of the board too TBH. everything looks mint, can't smell any magic smoke residue either.

                            Can you disconnect all wiring except for USB?
                            Does anything get hot to the touch shortly after connecting usb power?

                              Can you disconnect all wiring except for USB?
                              Does anything get hot to the touch shortly after connecting usb power?

                              I'll try it this afternoon. Regarding heat i haven't noticed anything, either right after turning the printer on or while standing there idle. I haven't got a thermal camera so i can't say it ain't any "blips" with hot spots when it boots though.


                              Oook, that's fucking weird (pardon my french)... I just disconnected everything except the CAN connector, bed (out0), wifi antenna & power to the board. Fired it up, and the problem was still there.
                              So i pulled the whole board out of the machine and powered it by USB with only the wifi antenna connected, now all drivers show up again:

                              I powered it down again and started inspecting the board, and it looks like it's some kind of ressidue (like possibly solder paste or something) in the general area around Driver0 and it's surrouding caps, resistors etc.

                              I'll try to take a picture of the above mentioned ressidue, and try to clean just that spot. Then put it back in the machine and see what happens.

                                @Phaedrux Ok, so I cleaned the board and powered it by USB again and all still seemed good..

                                So i put it back in the printer, ONLY connecting power and the wifi antenna. Booted, and: no drivers.

                                  Can you connect it to VIN for power when outside the printer and see if it still happens? And power by USB inside the printer?

                                  Is there something shorting on the back of the board when it's installed?

                                  Is there some mounting pressure flex when installed?

                                    @Phaedrux Yeah i can, and it's the same exact behaviour.

                                    So it can only see the drivers if not powered by VIN.

                                    Regarding how it's mounted, it's mounted with the stock Voron board mounts and click-on DIN rail mounts. Both printed in ABS, with ABS washers between the PCB and screws on the front side.

                                    Nothing shorting it while inside the printer either.

                                    When i had the board out of the machine it was still screwed on to the mounts, so twisting/pressure ain't the issue.

                                      Can it see (and move) the drivers if powered by vin and usb at the same time? Be careful with USB ground loops.

                                        @Phaedrux i haven't tried that since i thought that was a big no-no 🤣 i can try it this afternoon. What precautions should i take in regard to USB ground loops?

                                            Of course it's covered in the docs, the "one" place i didn't look 🤦‍♂️

                                            Ok so running the usb to a laptop running on battery sounds like the safest and easiest way to go. I'll do that later and report how it turns out.
