@Get3D Planetary gearboxes are usually not whole number ratios. What's the actual ratio?

What sort of full steps/mm will you end up with in a Z axis application?

Seems to me that 13:1 is way too high a ratio to be useful for anything 3D printer related <shrug>

@jens55 In the Z axis it's fine. I have 30:1 in the belt lifted Z axis of my printer, using a worm gear so the bed won't drop when the Z motor loses power.

13:1 may or may not be a high enough ratio to prevent bed drop. It will depend on the weight of the bed, friction, and the motor detent torque.

Planetary gear boxes don't usually have whole number ratios. That means that you probably won't be able to get nice, round whole-step movement values from the Z axis. You'll end up with a weird value like 158 um/whole step. It doesn't really matter - it will print fine, but the weird number can make it a little troublesome to calculate the number of layers in a given thickness of plastic. It's just a number, but that sort of stuff bothers me.

I run 50:1 on my extruder, and for a short while I was considering going up to 100:1.

            😊

I don't get it ... my z runs at 1:1 and 400 steps (nominal) per mm. Even that exceeds the limits of the mechanics. So you don't like microstepping so I can see a 4:1 reduction gear which is fine for printing but likely limits your travel speed for moving the gantry up and down. I can see no reason to go to a higher gear ratio.

so the bed won't drop when the Z motor loses power.

@Phaedrux , a 4:1 gear reduction would probably do the same thing for you but you could always introduce a small amount of friction, either constantly (easily overcome by the stepper motor) or when power to the z motors is shut off.

Constant reaistance to movement due to detent torque and gearing down is far easier to conrrol than constant friction. I've done belt z with no gear reduction and 4:1 and both drop with no power. Belt and worm is the next major mod for my P3Steels following on from 1mm pitch trapezoidal screw.

They are 5:1 same as the ones on the lulzbot. I only have very low stock right now but I can get more very soon.20191223_093847.jpg

(5+2/11):1 According to your data sheet.

This is a funny number, equivalent to a 57:1 gear followed by 1:11 gear. I wonder if those two numbers are intuitively visible when looking at that gear's internals.

As for bed dropping, my 310x310x6mm bed holds well with these anti backlash nuts https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32838135064.html (two 8mm lead screws, 4 starts, 8mm lead).

Edit: Not applicable for belt drives though.

The high gear ratio motor is mainly being discussed in relation to a belted bed, no lead screw.

I just want to let everyone know i dropper the price to 80.00 each. They are very nice extruders and work great. I gave 10 away and no one has replied at all. I hope the ones I sent out for free would let everyone know how good they are there was a lot of work put in to them. I hope to her back from the people I sent them to so we can see how they like them.

                              Thank you

@Get3D Yeah you need someone to actually write a review, it does seem like a lot of mass for me to be honest.

You would be surprised. I want so to write a review because I could put anything. So I would love some else to do it.

Maybe consider making your expectations clear from the get go in the future, helps reduce disappointment.

That said hopefully someone will feel the calling to do a write-up. Or reach out to some of the bigger names on YouTube to do a review perhaps. If you got say Alex Kenis to do a review I'm sure it would get all the praise it deserves.

I've only just got around to designing a mount for it.
My toolchanger has taken a little longer than I expected to get up and running.
That being said, I'm free of the family for a few days in a couple of weeks so I intend to get it all fitted and tested then.
