@apak yes I want to see that too and it is on our list. We deferred work on that project until work on the version 4 effector was completed, which it almost is now.

@dc42 A slightly larger effector would be nice as well, to be able to mount an orbiter extruder or bondtech lgx lite for direct extruder capabilities

@snimax yes the combo effector will be larger. My aim is to accommodate the Mini Sherpa and the Orbiter V2. I'm not sure abut the LGX Lite, it looks to me that for that extruder the distance between the filament path and the back of the stepper motor may be rather large.

@dc42 Smart Effector v4 is still prototyping? if so I think a second port for dual part fan it be useful. I use a smart effector mount like this one https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3960474 and the second fan port is needed.

Dc42 why did we ditch the 8 way Molex KK to a 8 way JST PH. Not only did everyone have to redo the connections but this jst seems to be made for 22ga or higher. I had silicone18ga running to the molex and it worked just fine. My 18ga wire is prob 15 feet long going to the duet board.
I Got 20ga to squeeze in but I still had to solder this short bridge to my already 18ga connections. I already broke a wire at the jst. Maybe I crimped to hard but seriously? These wires move back and fourth all day long and now I have 16 weak spots that will eventually break.
I have prob purchased at least 10 smart effectors over the years. I would really like to see a larger effector as well for extruders. I had to make custom extensions for the orbiter.

@patterson6 we changed the connector because the Molex KK was too large so that it fouled a top-mounted extruder, and it had a tendency to become disconnected.
I am open to suggestions for alternative connectors with positive latching that are less high than the Molex KK.

@dc42 2nd time a wire has broke with the JST PH. IMO at this point the Molex kk was a way better connector than these thin fragile wires that are even harder to crimp. I never had any problems with the tendency to become disconnected on the Molex kk. This is torture, fix this asap please. I can't be the only one.

@patterson6 the same wires that you would typically crimp to the 8-way Molex KK connector can be crimped to the PH connector. I actually find it easier to crimp PH2.0 than Molex KK - and I am 67 and have to use strong reading glasses when I make crimp connections.
From the photo I suspect that when you crimped the connector, you didn't ensure that the insulation had been crimped in the top part of the connector, because clearly the insulation has not been retained by the connector.
However, it's also clear that for security some sort of strain relief bracket needs to be mounted on the effector, and the cable tied to that, so that there is no flexing of the wires where they enter the connector.

They fit perfectly in the connector insulation and all. I spent a lot of money getting a different color for each connection. I'm sure 18ga was prob overkill but its a long connection, a heated chamber and it gave me other benefits. It is a premium wire on my printer other than a subpar ribbon cable. So how was I going to get that 18 ga on the jst ph when the 22 does not even fit properly in the crimp connections to crimp down on the insulation like its designed? You just said the same wires would typically crimp.
Now your telling me that it is easier to crimp a ph connection that's half the size of a molex kk?
Don't get me wrong, using the smart effector is 1,000x better than using a sheet of paper adjusting the end stops all the time back in 2013 on my crappy Rostock max. But let's not go backwards here. I can try using an even higher gauge but it looks like 24 will not even fit in that...

@patterson6 you may have a point. This is an extract from the datasheet for JST PH crimps:
So 24awg is the maximum size for the common crimps, but there is also a smaller size.
