      @FailsafeJim said in IR Z probe issues:

      @droftarts the red led flashes 4 times on start up and the red led triggers when near bed. Just thought I would let you know . Thanks again for helping me solve this , it was driving me bananas.

      Strange that the red led is behaving correctly but there is no output from the sensor. Can you provide close-up photos of both sides of the sensor? If using a smartphone camera, pull the camera away from sensor until the focus is sharp, then use the digital zoom to reduce the frame to be not too much larger than the sensor.

      I completely agree! I am able to print flawless first layers on large parts with a 0.4 nozzle and .2 first layer height and 100% width, Tricklaser delta. Thank you David for all the hard work!

      Thanks for stating your reason for doing this. The communication issue is that someone comes along and reads this without understanding the consequences. This happens all the time and I spend a lot of time helping people unlearn things they've read and they take for best practice. Using the slicer to compensate for calibration issues is not a best practice, That's all!

      Yes you can drive it directly from the bed heater terminals on the Duet. Be sure to get the polarity of the control wires right, for an SSR it matters.

      @Sethipus:

      The 30mm coldend fan on my Chimera print head and the internal fan of the Meanwell power supply are much quieter than the fans on my i3, too. With the "silent as the grave" TMC 2660 drivers powering the steppers on my D-bot, that thing is extremely quiet even while printing at high speed. It's always jarring to me when I watch a Youtube video of someone else's printer and it's got that loud and eerily musical stepper whine going full blast during a print. It's just a reminder of how nice the Duet Wifi is. In my view it's truly the Cadillac of 3D printer controllers.

      Many users, myself included, have found that because the steppers are so quiet, after period of time other sources of noise which weren't noticeable before, start to become intrusive. In my case, I changed to a fan less power supply which I am able to do because my bed has a mains heater. Then I have made full use of the thermostatic fan control options. The cold end fan is set to come on at 45 deg C so below that, it is off. I've also installed fans in my Duet enclosure which blow onto the back of the board but again, these run in thermostatic mode. I stuck thermistors on one of the stepper driver chips on both the Duet and the Duex5 so again, these fans although very quiet, never run unless the stepper chip gets above 45 degC. So when the machine is idle, it is totally silent (well apart from a very faint buzz from the steppers once they have moved and are running on the holding current). I'm even considering turning the steppers off completely at the end of every print because I always home at the start of every print, it wouldn't matter, but that's probably overkill.

      @dc42:

      It depends on your print bed surface and your type of printer:

      The IR sensor is small and light (it fits below the heatsink of an E3D hot end). It needs just 3 wires to connect. Its main disadvantage is that if you use a transparent print surface, you need to take precautions to minimise reflections from the back of that surface.

      BLTouch is more complicated to wire (5 wires) and set up, not open source (with patents applied for) so somewhat against the spirit of what reprap and duet3d stand for, larger and heavier. But it should work on almost any bed surface. I haven't used one, but others on this forum have,

      ordered my IR sensor from filastruder last night , decided it was a better option.
      thanks for the information
