It's been brought to my attention that one of our most active and valued community members has passed away. If you've ever read one of Danal's helpful and informative posts you'll likely be as disheartened as I was to learn that he has passed.

Terrible news. He was one of the Duet community's best assets, I always enjoyed both his posts and our emails back and forth. Thanks for sharing the link, @Phaedrux .

@Phaedrux, thanks for sharing. This is sad. I appreciated his contributions here.

BTW, for anybody that may be interested, his duet related code is in this link. For example a python API to talk to a duet board. https://github.com/DanalEstes

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

While I did not know him personally his contributions should be remembered.

This is heartbreaking news, but thanks for sharing.

Danal and I only interacted online over the last 6 months, but he certainly left his footprints behind on my work in ways that really kept me going.

Danal was the first person I know of to build a Jubilee and join the Jubilee Discord. When I kicked the files online back in September, Danal was the first person to find bugs and improvements for the documentation. In the months that followed, Danal took Jubilee and the rest of the community with him to a whole different level of capability by writing TAMV, a machine vision add-on enabling automatic tool offset alignment using an upwards facing webcam.

But let's forget about project contributions for a second. Danal was the first one to jump onto Jubilee Discord, and his discussion points was always sincere. And he became one of the chattiest community members, answering a multitude of first-timer questions and setting the tone for a warm discussion where new folks can learn from experts in a laid back session of IRC. In the tough world of online discussion forums, some earnest, light-hearted chat is hard to come by, but Danal was the one who set the tone for that. It was incredibly refreshing to engage with Danal online. Through his sincerity and responsiveness, it was like he believed that people would put their best feet forward if you did the same first.

I will miss a ton of things about this guy. I'll miss his transparency, his willingness to solve a problem and then share a well-formed solution online in code. I'll miss his kindness, how he always tried to meet folks where they were at in answering their questions. And I'll certainly miss his excitement for this stuff. Seriously, Danal was one hell of a great human beings to have hanging around these parts of the internet with us. It's going to be tough without him, but I think it's on us to keep echoing some of his character in the stuff we do here.

This is not the type of forum post I was expecting or wanting to read. I'd noticed we'd not heard from him recently but never expected this as the reason.

He was always helpfully chiming in on all sorts of different projects, be it Delta's, tool changers, corexy's or supporting one of his many software contributions.

This forum (and the rest of the 3D printing world) will be quieter without him and he will definitely be missed.

Thank you Danal for the support you've given everyone.

Danal gave so much to this community, he will be sorely missed. He was generous with his time helping people, as well as pushing the state of the art forward.

Danal helped so many users solve problems on this forum, racking up ~3500 posts in not much more than two years. He developed several open source projects related to Duet - see the link in @zapta's post above - including DuetLapse. His death must have been sudden because he was on this forum the previous evening. We will miss him greatly.

We will all miss his input and help but is there any way that his work on DuetLapse and the Python stuff he did get preserved with the Duet systems.

It would be a sacrilege if that was lost to everyone as some of his accounts are likely to get closed down in time.

I was shocked by hearing that. I remember Danal as being very helpful and polite.

Such sudden events remember me that we are all mortal and how important it is to "carpe diem".

I am saddened by the news. While I had limited direct interaction with Danal, his posts were always insightful and his projects an inspiration. He will certainly be missed in all the communities he participated in.

I have forked DuetLapse. DuetPython and TAMV to the Duet3D account. I am not sure low long github keeps accounts that become inactive up - I imagine a long time.
