Programming Z probes connected to expansion boards is not yet supported. For now you need to temporarily connect the Smart Effector to the main board if you want to change its sensitivity. I've logged this issue: https://github.com/Duet3D/RepRapFirmware/issues/815

@o_lampe said in "Cat whiskers" sensor as Z-probe?:

      @arhi
It only makes sense to spend more money than a BLTouch would cost, when the result is equal or better.

To me it would make sense investing time if it would solve a problem that exist and is not solved. TBH I don't see what unsolved problem this could solve except to work as underbed probe. ATTM I don't know of reliable underbed probe. Probing from the top, I doubt it can have smaller footprint than some piezo/bltouch/easytouch/.. sensor .. and as for precission and repeatability a simple microswitch is "good enough" so

but a real winner would be the heatsink-necklace as it has zero offset and requires less force than piezos.

I can't visualize how would this work

I wanted to add this has been a educational thread for me as to some of the constraints on Delta designs.

I don't know if I would switch to a smart effector over the SE300 but a revision that includes this would make me give consideration to losing the print area outside the triangle of the towers.

I run G32 and G29 S1 to enable mesh levelling which is not always need if your bed is in good shape and level I dont run G29 everytime as it stores the heightmap

I run G29 if something has change ...nozzle, effector but only then
Yes you need to make sure the nozzle is clean as it cant account for plastic on the nozzle.
You can run G30 S-1 to do a single probe as a minimum for G29 S1 to be effective

      Hope this helps

High heat printer builds are like putting out small fires everywhere. As soon as you get a handle on something, something else comes into play. EVERYTHING starts to matter when you start building up that kind of heat. I just tested out my high heat version 3.0 today which went surprisingly well. IMG_0734.JPG IMG_0732.JPG IMG_0731.JPGThis is my work in progress, I built the enclosure out of aluminum on top of a old stainless toolbox my father-in-law gave me, the enclosure's 24 x 24 x 36. It has a 1400W heater/fan combo I found on amazon for $30 originally for a gas fireplace. Everything's insulated and sealed with fire-foam or high heat silicone. The setup utilizes a main return duct at the top of the enclosure used to recirculate the air, it maxes out at roughly 120C. Insides a Ender 5 that I Frankensteined into a core xy running a BMGX2-M w/ mosquito liquids, you can almost cook an egg on the extruder steppers...Its been a fun project but I feel like I got more wrapped up into the challenge of getting it there than anything. Any questions feel free to reach out.

@dc42 Sorry, its the part cooling fans that keep turning on and off as the LED's turn off and on.

Thanks. I was mostly interested in whether all pins of the 8-pin connector had been soldered (they have), and whether both sides of inductor L1 were soldered down (which is hard to tell from your photo, but unlikely not to be).

@bassco How did you configure the Smart Effector for Klipper?
I can't seem to find any info on it 😞

      This is my current config:

      [probe] pin: PC1 z_offset: -0.1

The wiring was okay and was in working order before going Klipper, so that's not a problem.

@tgarr No worries about the thread digging, altough quite old, it is still as relevant as it was. In fact I just started a print with the exact same effector design as posted here. The 4th axis attachements are still evolving and I do have some minor changes planned to the effector design but noting major.

I don't use any special washers or something like that. Just the 6 screws (with a regular washer on top) that thread into brass heat set inserts.

In terms of calibration results here's the full DWC output string 🙂 . That is for a 180mm probe radius on a 400mm diameter bed.

      Calibrated 8 factors using 18 points, (mean, deviation) before (0.018, 0.046) after (-0.000, 0.043)

The results are certainly more consistent across the entire bed compared to the FSR's I used to use. I am honestly not sure if the 0.043mm deviation is considered good for a 400mm diameter bed.

If the problem occurs only while the fan is powered (not when it is spinning down), you could try setting Z probe type P9 in your M558 command, as if you were using a bltouch. That will cause the firmware to run deployprobe.g and retractprobe.g for each individual probe move. You could turn the fan off in deployprobe.g and on again in retractprobe.g.

The Smart Effector only "hijacks the fan power" to power the illumination LEDs.
