@Wiltonio sounds like you aren't running a proper config.
I suggest you revisit the config you have and replace it with the appropriate one from the firmware pack from ooznest

A combination of telling it to move in the wrong direction but also having the motor rotate in the wrong direction.

After rewiring(new wires for stepper and endstop) and new endstop, issue is gone...

So, now just the question of if the extra expense and lack of well trodden path is worth the difference in performance! 🙂

My problem was two fold. One is my io6.out pin doesn't work according to my scope and switching to a different pin fixed things. The other is I'm using 3.2.2 when the R argument for M563 is only available in RRF >= 3.3beta2. Same Problem with using the R argument is M950, only available in RRF >=3.3beta2.

I use the Reprap post processor. its an option from fusion 360. this allows me to use the M3 and M7 for spindle and mist cooling.

I have no direct experience with CNC machines, so i can't answer your questions #1 and #3. Others on this forum may be able to answer them.

Regarding question #2, RepRapFirmware supports up to 10 axes (soon to be up to 15) depending on which board you use.

RRF supports CNC spindle control commands.

I have a quite similar Problem:

I want to switch a on/off realy to switch the spindle via the M3/M5 command.

The relay is connected the fan port 7 of a Duet3 board.
I configured the following lines:

"M453 P7 S0 T0 C"out1+out7+out2" ; set CNC Mode"

Result:
"M3" does not switch the relay, but "M3 S1" does.
"M5" stops the spindle, as intended.

How can I configure the board, so I can switch the spindle with "M3" only, without M1, because this is how the gcode ist generated my the postprocessor?

With v3 firmware, at least 3.1.1 and 3.2.0 you have access to the firmware Object Model.

For example move.axes[0].machinePosition gives the current position for axis 0.

If you enable TELNET using...

M586 S1 P2 T0

...you can use the following to send that data to a TELNET client connected to your printer.

M118 L0 P4 S{"move.axes[0].machinePosition = " ^ move.axes[0].machinePosition}

If axis 0 is positioned at 10 then the result on the client is...

move.axes[0].machinePosition = 10.000

If you create a file in the system folder called daemon.g and it contained that M118 command the TELNET client would receive a message once per second.

What I don't know is if this would work when the firmware was executing a job file.

I would like to do the same things. I use external stepper driver, is that possible to override directly the speed with a potentiometer on the driver. Or something like that is not recommended ?

Ok, the machine seems to be performing mostly correctly now. I'm still seeing my macro probing the wrong direction occasionally, but I haven't caught it doing that in the last half-our. So I'm going to mark this as "solved" since my problem of the head occasionally not lifting seems to be fixed by the updated firmware.

If I can find a clear pattern for when the probing macro probes "towards the workpiece" in the wrong direction I'll open another question.

How is your project coming?

I'm surprised you are using ball screws and a control without backlash compensation. Do you just need fast, without concern for precision? Is there something else drawing you to duet?

If duet had backlash comp, I'd put it on one (or more) of my desktop machines, but without it, I'm sticking with the existing LinuxCNC. I suppose one could use a Marlin or Beagle board, but I haven't used either yet, so I don't have a favorite or a reason to migrate. (Like standardization.)

Thanks to your hint I decided to look at the source code and found that on the Duet2 only fan 1 is turned on at power on - and of course that's the one I was using - so I just swapped my two relays (the other controls the spotting laser - no big deal) and now it no longer turns on at reboot.

Iirc dc42 said firmware does not adjust steps/mm with changes to microstepping for external drivers.

So just configure the external drivers to desired microstepping and then steps/mm to as you would for internal drivers
