@jay_s_uk thank you. Sorry given the title was using Lightburn over USB I thought maybe you had a way to make that happen. Doing it all offline or not live in the software is okay but there are tools in the live software that would be handy for sure.

@Ian-0 yes it's a safety feature. However, we have a feature request to allow it to be overridden for special purposes such as focussing the laser. Meanwhile, a workaround is to create a dummy axis (e.g. U) using M584. Then you can send e.g. G92 U0 G1 U100 F100 S255 to turn the laser on for one minute

@droftarts so is there anyway to use Lightburn live with the Duet or would it be Generate Gcode upload then burn.
I am thinking about things like framing or setting focus are easier with the software live from what I have seen.

@jay_s_uk Thanks jay - I think I'm there....it's coming on and off anyway as planned - I noticed that the frequency F1000 line in the gcode seems to be controlled by the mm/sec speed setting in Lightburn - when I changed it to 500mm, it changed the gcode to G1 x160.587 F500 and the laser didn't work.

Changed that to 1000 mm/s and it worked. Also added S1 too and works fine.

Thanks for your help mate, I really appreciate it. I can actually use the thing finally! Awesome. Owe you one. Thanks so much.

So the Wiki says to use heater3 and I've seen other recommendations to use the heater pins for PWM.
So you would say use a fan instead?

It's only a small signal you want to switch on/off. A heater FET is way overkill for this task.
Although it will work, it switches probably slower than the fan-FET and it is only recommended if the Duet board runs on 12V too.
Otherwise the laser driver sees 24V on the PWM pin...not funny.

The fan-FET can be jumpered to 5V, no matter what voltage the Duet gets.

@NO1NOKAO the DueX will be enabled automatically when the firmware on the Duet detects it. If you send M115 then the response should mention the DueX.

      there a few users using a k40 with an SKR2 running the STM32 port. I use a fly-e3-pro.

Yeah I saw that article a while back. I spent about six months researching first 3D hardware and then laser hardware before deciding on my current configuration (yeah I am an engineer and sometimes plan too much). Because of this I think I reached the end of the internet for K40 searches lol.

btw, the link for the honeycomb working panel doesn't work

      fixed, thank you!

@dc42 said in tickle signal when not firing laser on same pin?:

Can the program that generates your GCode output S0.005 instead of S0 on non-cutting G1 moves?

You could use another PWM-capable pin to generate the tickle signal, and use a gate to OR it with the main laser control signal before being fed to the lase

Hi sorry For taking so long to reply been busy but I am currently trying the OR gate method you suggested and I am able to get both "HEATER4" and "HEATER5" outputs onto 1 pin through a CD74HC32E but they are not in sync so the signal looks a bit all over the place.

      Scope Readings.jpg
(Pin Outputs are on the top left of each picture)

Is there a way to fix it? Maybe by having to use 2 pins on the same pwm timer??? if so which 2 pins should I use or is that to be expected. as for the program I'm going to use I was planning on lightburn. I only have the free trial right now but checking it out there is no option to set OFF state to S0.005.

@rabbit currently the laser configuration in RRF is not part of the tool definition. We intend to change this in a future version of RRF; but for now you need to use the M452 command (https://docs.duet3d.com/en/User_manual/Reference/Gcodes#m452-select-laser-device-mode) to switch the machine into laser mode.

You can still use M563 to define tools, but the laser function will work even when you don't have a tool selected.

Scratch that, it was working, but now the laser stays on when it shouldn't.
I'm too tired to work out why at the moment though.
