I was not. I loaded 1.21.3 and it worked then went back to 1.23.2 and it is working perfectly. All is well.
I dont know if its possible but it seemed like updating from the original FW that was on the board (purchased from filastruder in February of 2018) to the latest was the issue. I tried every way under the sun with no luck until loading the earlier FW

I got it fixed.

A stray strand of copper (I assume from when I was making my connections I didn't get all my cut strands cleaned up) had lodged under the connector housing, and likely shorting something. I didn't see it until I started looking at the solder joints with a magnifying glass.

There have been threads about this before, but couldn't find it atm; but its not a windows 10 problem as it works just fine on my windows 10.

I was looking at an existing low profile design enclosure that had no venting, but I've found a derivative design that includes venting, but not low profile. Ten minutes with Tinkercad and I now have a low profile design with venting. It's on the printer, as I write.

I also did want to know the details about cooling for general reference. This is a Voron build I'm working on, and the PD7i sits just in front of the front door of a heated chamber, so I was concerned about originally having no cooling. Now, with the added vents to the enclosure I'm using, and from your comments, I will assume all is fine.

Turns out it was voltage related.

M122 showed last reset was due to power switch or brown out.

After changing the voltage supply, the unit comes on and communicates correctly.

Now i have other things to chase down -

sure, if you can mount it, it'll work just fine. regular through hole will also have a greater power rating, 1/4w for through hole vs 1/8w or less for the smd

I really hope that at some point, someone that does know firmware stuff has the same problem and will add the vertical layout to the options. I really think that the vertical layout would make a lot of sense in a lot of printers.

You might be able to open the Console on the PanelDue and enter M292 manually to avoid going back and forth between rooms (or add a "continue" macro with just M292 for more convenience) until David had time to investigate.
